About The Event

Teresa Hepker and Louise Sargent of Two Foxes Studios present Exploring Batik.

Batik is the ancient art of embellishing fabric using resists (for instance, beeswax) and dyes.

STUDENT TO BRING: rubber gloves, a dust mask, and an apron and/or wear old clothes. The dust mask is to protect you from dye and chemical dusts while mixing solutions. This is a hands-on class and the technique is messy!

In this three-day class, you will do two batik projects. The first, completed the first day, teaches basic batik skills. You will try a variety of wax application tools, mix chemicals for a dye batch, dye your fabric, and remove the wax by boiling. For the second project, you will design and create a wall hanging, mounted on a large embroidery hoop. You will create the design on paper, transfer it to cotton fabric, and apply hot beeswax (the resist) to the fabric stretched on the hoop. You will then immerse the fabric in a cold water dye solution, and finally remove the wax by boiling the fabric in water. When finished, the dye is permanent and the fabric can be machine washed and dried.

While you work, instructors will discuss the history of batik, share pictures of batiks from other cultures, and show examples of their work.

Class schedule:

Aug 14th, 21st, and 24th

1-3pm, break, 4-6pm
