One of the best ways to develop artistic skill is to do a copy of a master painting. Whether or not the painting is duplicated precisely, the process allows students to discover the proper way to paint. In this class, the purpose is not to make an exact reproduction, although that may happen, but to explore the way a painting is constructed. Chris will guide students through different ways to approach this, using demonstration and lecture or presentation. During the first week, he will show many examples he has created himself, along with a general discussion of practices for transferring an image to the final piece. Students who already have something in mind before the class begins are encouraged to bring those examples; otherwise, the piece will be chosen during the first class.
