All together
the dalles

The dalles art center celebrates community through

a city-wide art collaboration called

"all together the dalles"

With the support, collaboration, and funding of The City of The Dalles, Fort Dalles Displays, Eagle Publishing, and many volunteers, The Dalles Art Center (TDAC) has developed a way to pay homage to the past and present of the city by creating a collaborative project with two artists. Learn more about this work of art and imagination that re-interprets a collection of iconic features of The Dalles, Oregon.

The purchase of the print will help The Dalles Art Center fulfill its mission to provide art education, exhibition space, and community engagement with art for The Dalles, Wasco County, and the Columbia River Gorge.

The Book

TDAC is proud to extend the All Together The Dalles project to include a commemorative book that celebrates our history. Local author and historian Karl Vercouteren wrote extensively on the buildings and cultural assets that make this an incredible asset to the Columbia Gorge and Oregon. The collaboration and community focus is in alignment with the print and mural project as well as our mission to be a connecting hub to inspire and engage with art. We worked with the Dawn Hert and now Kaitlyn Cook to share grant resources from SHPO and the Wasco County Cultural Trust to design the book through Amie Brittle and Cassie Courtney of Corner Office Creative. Numerous volunteers helped with proofreading and the creation of an index for the book. Special thank you to Vonda Chandler for her financial support with printing. Proceeds of the book support TDAC directly. Thank you for your continued support in serving our community!!!

Walking Tour App

TDAC's Art and Design Committee worked with The City of The Dalles Community Development department to create a walking tour app through shared grant support from the State Historic Preservation Office and The Wasco County Cultural Coalition. Currently, the walking tour app provides a history, images, directions for 70+ buildings in The Dalles. The walking tour will be expanding to include the murals from the Wall Dogs and The Mural Society.  Later this Fall many sites will have plaques like the one pictured above that will identify the building, cultural feature and/or murals as part of the tour, which raises awareness and engagement with our community. Below you can see what the app provides. There is also an online version accessible through a web browser.

About the print & the artist

Beth Kerschen

Beth Kerschen, a nationally exhibited artist, has created a work of art and imagination that re-interprets a collection of iconic features of the city. Kerschen has developed an arresting technique that captures landmarks, local favorites, industry, and the unique landscape in stunning black and white photography. They are then merged into a visual collage that brings together these aspects of The Dalles in new and unexpected ways.

about the mural & the artist

Chris Pothier

The print will be hand-painted onto large wall panels by local painter Chris Pothier with support from students young and old in a traditional atelier model. Pothier is a local realist painter and instructor who was trained in New England and exhibits nationally.

About the location

The Dalles Chronicle Building

Finding the right wall was a critical component of this project. After reviewing several options, we approached Eagle Publishing about producing a mural on the new Chronicle building on East 2nd Street. It was the perfect location with its proximity to the City's East Entrance, an area with scant public art. The building had also been recently renovated and the walls reconditioned with a dark charcoal paint scheme that would support the monochromatic palette of the mural. It was also an opportunity to bring a new mural to the sight of an earlier mural. We are grateful for the support of Eagle Publishing for housing the mural and for the financial support with the project.
