This extensive introduction to oils is for painters of any level, beginning to advanced. Over the course of 7 classes, you will begin to form a solid foundation of knowledge for color, light/shade source, & value by learning to prepare a canvas prior to painting and paint from life using simple objects, like spheres and cylinders.

Outline of skills, techniques, & materials you will encounter:

We will first talk about color and the appropriate use of color. Then we will work on mixing color by matching colors by eye, gaining important information about which colors to use and when. We will start by learning how to properly prepare a canvas or panel before the painting begins, then construct a painting using light and dark blocking to reach the most effective results.    As far as materials are concerned, a simple palette, using just 7 or 8 colors, will be applied during the course. Chris Pothier will provide a solid foundation of materials and information about materials during this class. Although sable brushes, flats, and rounds are preferred, any oil brushes you may have will do.  A palette knife, paper palettes, and a plastic case for holding your materials is appropriate to provide on your own. Chris Pothier will go over the canvas panels or boards to purchase during the first class. Chris and TDAC will supply the oil color and solvents to use during class.
