July - August

Summer 2017 Art Camp dates are here! This summer, Art Camp will run from July 3rd to August 30th on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at The Dalles Art Center. Art Camp is not only a fun way to add to your child's summer, but it also encourages creativity and builds friendships. And it all stARTS here! Listed below are classes, dates, and descriptions.

 

Morning Classes:      10:30am - 12:00pm  ages 6 -8 

Afternoon Classes:   1:00pm - 3:00om  ages 9 - 14

JULY cont.

AUGUST

7/3: Painting Trees In Landscape with Sarah Starr

Artists will explore the different lines and shapes of trees using pencil and pastel.  Composition, color, value, and perspective will be integrated to form beautiful landscape drawings that display proper understanding of depth and composition.  All Ages (6 - 14)

 

7/5: Insects, Butterflies & Bugs with Sarah Starr

Artists will work from provided pictures of their favorite creepy and crawly creatures. This class will focus on detail and magnification when working with a reference much smaller than their finished work of art. Artists will make use of a combination of watercolor paints and pens.  All Ages (6 - 14)

 

67/6: Barns, Skyscrapers, & Other Buildings with Sarah Starr

Artists will choose an architectural style subject as the focus in a landscape or cityscape painting.  Consideration of perspective and composition will be the focus.  Mixed-media- pens, paint and pastels.  All Ages (6 - 14)

 

7/10: Painting Flowers From Life with Sarah Starr

Artists will each have their own fresh flower or group of flowers to draw and paint from life.  Examples of flower art will be presented, such as Georgia O'Keefe an Vincent van Gogh.  Everyone will find they have a favorite flower or two as their own personal style of expression will unfold. All Ages (6 - 14)

 

7/11: Silly Self Portraits with Sarah Starr

Artists will learn ways to draw the human face, using themselves as the subject.  Expression will be encouraged, along with a range of interesting color combinations making these portraits very unique and fun.  All Ages (6 - 14)

7/12: Animal & Pet Portraits with Sarah Starr

Artists can bring a photo from home or choose from one of the many offered in class.  Gesture, scale, color and composition will be explored in the creation of colorful animal portraits using watercolor and colorful pens. All Ages (6 - 14)

 

7/13: Abstract Art with Sarah Starr

Artists will learn a few of the many ways one can go about creating abstract art.  Examples of Abstract Landscape, Aboriginal Art, and Abstract Expressionism will be shared for a starting point. Markers and watercolors on watercolor boards will be the materials. All Ages (6 - 14)

7/20: Make Your Own Journal with Jinx Griswold

Does your young artist like to collect lots of little scraps from vacations, ticket stubs, tags, photos, or other memories? During this workshop, students will learn to build and bind their own creative journal for scrapbooking all of their precious memories. Bring whatever memories you have to class, as well as an old hardcover book that you don’t mind cutting up. Children’s picture books work well. The Instructor will have extra materials on hand.  All Ages (6 - 14)

 

7/25: Painting Land & Seascapes with Sarah Starr

If you missed the Trees in Landscape class, do not worry, this class will address similar subjects. Artists will learn techniques to apply to land and seascape paintings that will give their artwork both depth and clarity. Artists will paint with acrylics on canvas and create one painting from start to finish. All Ages (6 - 14)

7/26: Signs That Inspire with Sarah Starr

Artists can bring their own inspiring quote/words or choose form a list offered.  The process will be fun and the outcome will be a wooden sign that can be hung inside home or outside the front door to welcome friends and family-with a meaningful message.  Materials- wood, paint, stencils, and embellishments. All Ages (6 - 14)

 

7/27: Painting Birds on Canvas with Sarah Starr

Given a wide variety of birds to choose from, artists will create a lovely acrylic painting of a bird  from the Northwest.  Artists will explore the art of acrylic on canvas painting. All Ages (6 - 14)

 

AUGUST

8/7-9, & 8/14-16: Clay & More ONE (afternoon)

with Yvonne Pepin Wakefield

This four-day class consists of several low-fired ceramic projects which introduce students to varied hand-building techniques to create both functional and decorative artworks. Demonstrations in coil, pinch, slab, and texture will develop an individual exploration and style. Pieces will be sealed with glaze in non-toxic, food-safe colors. Detailed discussion on the process of clay firing and design sketching rounds out this introductory course. All Ages (6 - 14)

8/7 & 8/9: My First Master Piece (morning)

This two-day workshop is an introductory painting course for ages six to eight.  Students will learn color theory, color mixing, blending and value scales during the first session and apply them on day two as they paint a still life on canvas suitable for framing. Tuition cost covers a set of twelve acrylic paints and double brush set that young artists will get to take home at the end of class. Ages 6 - 8 ONLY (see 8/14 & 16)

8/8: Pottery Painting Plates with Lettie Young

This class introduces artists to the use of color and design interpreted on functional ceramic plates. Artists will have a wide variety of glazes to use that are dishwasher and food safe. This comprehensive glaze exploration class is a perfect introduction to color and glaze theory for artists who plan to take the “Clay and More” class later this summer. All ages (6 - 14)

8/22: GORGE-ous Ceramic Mosaics with Lettie Young

Children will explore the use of symbol, color, and repetitious design through the assemblage and application of pre-cut ceramic tile mounted on particle board. After arranging their tile into an original, Columbia River Gorge inspired layout, they will grout their artwork into place and come home with a ceramic mosaic ready for hanging or a become a dinner table center piece.

All Ages (6 - 14)

8/14 & 16: My First Master Piece with Yvonne PW

8/15: Pottery Painting Bowls with Lettie Young

This class is similar to the plates class on 8/8. A comprehensive glaze exploration class is a perfect introduction to color and glaze theory for artists who plan to take the “Clay and More” class later this summer. All ages (6-14)

 

8/17: Graffiti As Art ONE with Lettie Young

Artists will create a Banksy-style, graffiti stencil of themselves with spray paint. After this class, each student will return home with a 8.5x11”, ready to hang self-portrait painted on particle board. FYI: The instructor needs to take a photograph of EVERY participating artist at least 2 weeks prior to class in order to format stencils ahead of time. It is most convenient for the instructor if parents/guardians can bring young artists in at time of registration to get their photo taken at TDAC. All Ages (6-14)

8/22: My Dream Garden Ceramic Mosaic  

with Lettie Young

All Ages (6 - 14)

8/23, 8/28, & 8/30: Clay & More TWO (afternoon)

This three-day class is similar to the prior workshop, although it offers a different price-point and projects. Artists who enjoyed Clay & More ONE are encouraged to repeat and take Clay and More TWO. Repeat students will be challenged to complete more advanced projects. This class will also cater to the students who did not take the clay workshop earlier in the month. Demonstrations in coil, pinch, slab, and texture will allow each student to develop and individual exploration and style. All Ages (6 - 14)

8/24: Graffiti As Art TWO with Lettie Young

This class is exactly the same as the first installment in July (see class on 8/17 for details). However, Artists who enjoyed it the first time are encouraged to repeat and create a more challenging or whimsical stencil of themselves. This class also caters to artists who did not take the class in July. All Ages (6 - 14) 

8/29: Tie-Dye T-Shirts TWO with Marcy Hutson

Get your gloves on and get ready to have a blast! This class is exactly the same as the first installment in July (see class on 7/19 for details). Artists will learn several tie-dying techniques during this class before they get to choose how they want to dye their very own t-shirt. Repeat students will be encouraged to try a different, or more difficult technique.  Students are encouraged to bring their own, plain-white clothing item to class with them. However, if they can’t find one they like, they will be able to tie-dye their art camp shirt with darker dyes.  All Ages (6 - 14)
